Actress Gabrielle Union has started producing her own films, because she is sick and tired of reading roles to play black slaves.
The Hollywood star believes that young moviegoers aren’t interested in another two-hour drama about the ills of slavery, and so she’s looking forward to giving them what they want.
She explains, “There was this script that came and it was yet another slavery story told from the perspective of the disgruntled Southerner, and I’m reading this script and thinking, ‘At what point did somebody think I would want to comb the Missus’ hair.’
“I don’t want to do this. It’s about being pro-active. I’m optioning a script (actress) Regina Hall wrote and I’ve optioned a book called The Vow.
“This is our hope for our future as people of color in this industry - we are trying to get our own funding together. The 18 to 34-year-olds don’t care about race.”
