Former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and celebrity DJ AM have been critically injured in a fiery Learjet crash, which killed four people on Friday night in Columbia, South Carolina.
Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said the plane carrying six people was departing shortly before midnight Friday when air traffic controllers reportedly “saw sparks coming from the runway — whether that was from the aircraft or its engines, we don’t know”.
It appears the twin-engine private Learjet was attempting to take off, ran off the runway through a fence and hit an embankment. “They overran the end of runway 11. They impacted the antenna array and a number of lights at the end of the runway. They went through the perimeter fence and across the roadway here,” said National Transportation Safety Board spokeswoman Debbie Hersmen. “There was a significant post-crash fire.”
Sources tell TMZ.com that Barker and DJ AM, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, saved their own lives by jumping out the door of the burning plane, almost immediately after the small jet came to a halt. Barker suffered burns from the waist down, while AM’s face was severely burned. They were airlifted to the Joseph Still Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia early Saturday morning.
Two other passengers — assistant Chris Baker, 29, of Studio City, Calif., and security guard Charles Still, 25, of Los Angeles — and two crew members — pilot Sarah Lemmon, 31, of Anaheim Hills, Calif., and co-pilot James Bland, 52, of Carlsbad — were killed when the plane crashed at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport.
