‘Time Out New York’ Names Jay-Z Top 40 New Yorker
September 26th, 2008 | Posted in Magazines

Time Out New York magazine has named hip-hop mogul Jay-Z one of its “New York 40″ for its 40th anniversary issue, which honors New Yorkers who have made a positive impact on the city.
The magazine asked the Brooklyn-born MC about other potential selections, such as Nas and Kanye West, for the exclusive list. Here’s what he said:
You’re the only rapper on this list. We were considering Nas but have this 13-year rule: People on this list had to have had an impact in the last 13 years. And Illmatic was 1994. Should we have included him?
Ah, wow! [Laughs] That’s a tough question. [Pauses] Yeah, only because of the impact of that album, when it’s considered one of the best albums ever created, you have to document that. How about Kanye? Has he earned it yet?
He’s from Chicago, but he’s close. I don’t know if he’s had that one album that’s moved the entire culture, but he’s hit it three times in a row. He’ll be on every list one day.
Why is Jay-Z hating on Nas and Kanye West? You be the judge! The interview is in the September 25th issue of Time Out New York magazine on newsstands now.

Nas Takes On FOX News & Bill O’Reilly
July 26th, 2008 | Posted in Politics

Rap superstar Nas has delivered a petition to Fox News Channel’s midtown Manhattan HQ, which was signed by 620,127 people who’ve noticed a pattern of racist coverage on FOX.
The rapper joined grassroots groups ColorOfChange.org and MoveOn.org in protest of FOX News’ racist smears against the Obamas and other Black Americans.
“FOX poisons the country with racist propaganda and tries to call it news,” said Nas.
He caught ColorOfChange.org and MoveOn.org’s attention with a bitingly intelligent song called “Sly Fox,” which has lyrics like, “Watch what you watchin’, FOX keeps feeding us toxins, Stop sleeping, Start thinking” and “I pledge allegiance to the fair and balanced truth/Not the biased truth/Not the liar’s truth/But the highest truth.”
Check out Nas’ interview and performance of “Sly Fox” on The Colbert Report below.

Kanye West Calls Soulja Boy The New Nas
June 22nd, 2008 | Posted in Celebrity Gossip, Music News

Rap superstar Kanye West has written a post on his blog about the Ice-T vs. Soulja Boy beef. The Stronger hitmaker came to the defense of the 17-year-old rapper and said:
Soulja boy is fresh ass hell and is actually the true meaning of what hip hop is sposed to be. He came from the hood, made his own beats, made up a new saying, new sound and a new dance with one song. He had all of America rapping this summer. If that ain’t Hip Hop then what is? A bunch of wannabe keep it real rappers that ain’t even relevant, recycling samples trying to act like it’s 96 again and all they do is hate on new shit? Niggas always talk about the golden age but for a 13 year old kid, this is the golden age!!! That song was so dope cause everything he said had a hidden meaning… that’s Nas level shit… he just put it over some steel drums which is also some Nas shit if you had the 2nd album cassette with the bonus track “Silent Murder” on it. In closing… new niggas get ya money$$$$$$$$$$ Keep this shit fresh and original…. ain’t no fuckin’ rules to this shit and that’s what real hip hop is to me.
We don’t know about all that, but ultimately old school rappers are still the forefather of Soulja Boy’s nuts!

Nas SPINs His Way Out Of Controversy
June 20th, 2008 | Posted in Music News

Hip-Hop superstar Nas recently sat down with SPIN magazine to talk about Jay-Z, Bill O’Reilly, and the controversy over his album title. Here’s the scoop:
Why did you wait so long to change the album title if you knew it was going to be a problem?
It was a matter of deciding between changing the name or skipping the major retail outlets I knew wouldn’t carry the record and just selling it through my website and stores that had balls. [Def Jam chairman] L.A. Reid and I had a conversation — I enlightened him and he enlightened me, and he was with me. But I want as many people as possible to hear this, and it was going to be a messy battle that was going to distract from what the album had to say. You’ve drawn heat from some older black leaders for the title. Does that surprise you at all?
It’s a concept album about the word and what lies behind it. I don’t want any respectable member of the black leadership to kidnap me and shoot me. A lot of people from that generation have achieved things and moved on, but I’m still on the grind, going through a lot of shit, and I express it. But a lot of our elders never want to deal with that. I understand, it’s hard. I called the record Nigger, with the “er,” to create a dialogue. You can’t just say, “Why are rappers using this word?” You gotta stick around to find out.Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly denounced your participation in a memorial concert at Virginia Tech as an “insult to the victims” of the shootings in 2007. You made a song about your feud with him.
“Sly Fox.”

Nas Changes Controversial Album Title
May 23rd, 2008 | Posted in Celebrity News, Music News

In the face of mounting controversy, rap star Nas has decided to change the name of his next album from “Nigger” to “Nas.” The Queensbridge rapper released following statement:
“It’s important to me that this album gets to the fans. It’s been a long time coming. I want my fans to know that, creatively and lyrically, they can expect the same content and the same messages.
“It’s that important. The streets have been waiting for this for a long time. The people will always know what the real title of this album is and what to call it.”
Reverend Al Sharpton, one of hip-hop’s harshest critics, was pleased to hear that Nas decided against calling his new album “Nigger.” The civil rights activist released the following statement:
“I have a lot of respect for Nas. I liked what he said about Sean Bell. We have a fundamental disagreement on this. He can rap against me. I’ll preach against them. We’re still friends.
“This proves that record companies and distributors realize that the community will not allow companies to profit from denigrating us and polluting the minds of our youth.”

Nas graced the red carpet at Sunday’s Grammy Awards in Los Angeles to promote his upcoming album, Nigger.
The Hip-Hop Is Dead lyricist wore a black t-shirt with the word “Nigger” screen printed on the front. His wife Kelis also made a similar fashion choice.
He explained the importance of their attire by saying, “It’s all the experiences we go through every day, of all ethnicities, Black, White, indifferent.
“We’ve all at some point felt discriminated on, whether it’s in Dominican Republic, whether it’s in China, whether it’s in Iraq with soldiers getting their heads blown off for reasons we don’t know why. The meaning of the word is supposed to be ignorant.
“So no longer are Black people still niggers, it’s also me and you. I want people to think about what I’m thinking about today.”

Kanye West Is Not A Gracious Winner, Is He?
February 11th, 2008 | Posted in Celebrity Gossip, Celebrity News, Music News, Television

Kanye West certainly had a lot to say during his acceptance speech for the Best Rap Album at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles last night.
The Louis Vuitton Don asked for the background music to be cut twice, as he took shots at beaten nominees Common and Nas.
He also dedicated the award to his mother, Dr. Donda West, who died last November.
He said, “It feels good to be home. A lot of people said hip hop is dead, but that was just Nas. And Common, you can’t drop an album the same year as me.”
As the background music began to hurry him off the stage, he pleaded, “Come on - you gonna play music on me?” He continued, speaking about his mother’s death, “I appreciate all the support and all the prayers.”
And pleaded again, “It would be good taste to stop the music there”, before continuing, “I appreciate everything and I know you are really proud of me right now and I know you wouldn’t want me to stop and you’d want me to be the number one artist in the world. And Mamma, all I’m gonna do is keep making you proud. We won this.”
Kanye had eight nominations going into the ceremony and took home four: best rap album for “Graduation,” best solo performance for “Stronger,” best rap song for “Good Life” and best rap performance by duo or group for his collaboration with Common on “Southside.”
