‘Time Out New York’ Names Jay-Z Top 40 New Yorker
September 26th, 2008 | Posted in Magazines

Time Out New York magazine has named hip-hop mogul Jay-Z one of its “New York 40″ for its 40th anniversary issue, which honors New Yorkers who have made a positive impact on the city.
The magazine asked the Brooklyn-born MC about other potential selections, such as Nas and Kanye West, for the exclusive list. Here’s what he said:
You’re the only rapper on this list. We were considering Nas but have this 13-year rule: People on this list had to have had an impact in the last 13 years. And Illmatic was 1994. Should we have included him?
Ah, wow! [Laughs] That’s a tough question. [Pauses] Yeah, only because of the impact of that album, when it’s considered one of the best albums ever created, you have to document that. How about Kanye? Has he earned it yet?
He’s from Chicago, but he’s close. I don’t know if he’s had that one album that’s moved the entire culture, but he’s hit it three times in a row. He’ll be on every list one day.
Why is Jay-Z hating on Nas and Kanye West? You be the judge! The interview is in the September 25th issue of Time Out New York magazine on newsstands now.

Rappers Kanye West & Rhymefest Produce Puppet TV Show
September 26th, 2008 | Posted in Television

Rap superstar Kanye West and fellow Chicago rapper Rhymefest has teamed up with Comedy Central for a television program described as “hip-hop meets The Muppets”.
The rappers will provide new music for the project, tentatively titled “Alligator Boots,” and host the half-hour pilot episode. The plan is to have a different celebrity guest host for every episode, which is similar to the setup on the original “Muppet Show.”
It’s from Jackhole Productions, the company behind Comedy Central’s puppet-centric “Crank Yankers” that was founded by “South Park” writer Jimmy Kimmel, Adam Carolla, and Daniel Kellison. Comedy Central is considering the series for its 2009 schedule.
Kanye West and Rhymefest are serving as executive producers on the pilot alongside Kellison.

Barack Obama Releases Official Soundtrack Album
September 21st, 2008 | Posted in Politics

Barack Obama’s presidential campaign is getting an official soundtrack, which features Kanye West, John Legend, John Mayer, Sheryl Crow and other big name stars.
It’s called “Yes We Can: Voices of a Grassroots Movement.” The album takes its title from an Obama campaign slogan and will be available for sale exclusively through Obama’s web site.
The musical collection costs $24.99 for a digital download and $30 for a hard copy. Proceeds from the CD will help raise money for Obama’s campaign until “Election Day” November 4th, 2008.
Most of the songs on the disc have been previously released, such as Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours.” But a few of the songs are new, including John Legend’s “Pride in the Name of Love” and “Promised Land” by Malik Yusef featuring Kanye West and Adam Levine of Maroon 5.
Earlier this year, Obama inspired an all-star music video featuring John Legend, Scarlet Johansson, Kate Walsh, Common, and other celebs, led by the Black Eyed Peas’ will.i.am and titled “Yes We Can,” which became a viral sensation, garnering millions of views on the Internet.

50 Cent & Kanye West To Battle Again
September 20th, 2008 | Posted in Music News

Rap superstars 50 Cent and Kanye West are set to take each other on in another sales battle as the pair’s new albums will be released a week apart in December 2008.
Mr. West won the last battle when his album Graduation outsold his chart rival’s Curtis in September of ‘07, after both records were released on the same day.
And now the rappers are scheduled for a pre-Christmas rematch of the classic clash, with Interscope Records boss Jimmy Iovine confirming 50’s new album, Before I Self Destruct, will hit stores on December 9th, which is a week before the release date of Kanye West’s 808’s & Heartbreak.
Needless to say, there is no love lost between the two heavyweights. At a recent concert in Albany, New York 50 Cent and crew made fun of Ye’s recent clash with the paparazzi, and openly mocked Kanye’s new single “Love Lockdown.” [Watch here]
In response to the comments Fif made about him, the Jesus Walks hitmaker wrote the following on his blog: “I guarantee this (808’s & Heartbreak) will be 50’s favorite album of mine. This will be gangster’s album of the year.”

Kanye West Calls Soulja Boy The New Nas
June 22nd, 2008 | Posted in Celebrity Gossip, Music News

Rap superstar Kanye West has written a post on his blog about the Ice-T vs. Soulja Boy beef. The Stronger hitmaker came to the defense of the 17-year-old rapper and said:
Soulja boy is fresh ass hell and is actually the true meaning of what hip hop is sposed to be. He came from the hood, made his own beats, made up a new saying, new sound and a new dance with one song. He had all of America rapping this summer. If that ain’t Hip Hop then what is? A bunch of wannabe keep it real rappers that ain’t even relevant, recycling samples trying to act like it’s 96 again and all they do is hate on new shit? Niggas always talk about the golden age but for a 13 year old kid, this is the golden age!!! That song was so dope cause everything he said had a hidden meaning… that’s Nas level shit… he just put it over some steel drums which is also some Nas shit if you had the 2nd album cassette with the bonus track “Silent Murder” on it. In closing… new niggas get ya money$$$$$$$$$$ Keep this shit fresh and original…. ain’t no fuckin’ rules to this shit and that’s what real hip hop is to me.
We don’t know about all that, but ultimately old school rappers are still the forefather of Soulja Boy’s nuts!

Kanye West’s Fashionably Late Show Angers Fans
June 16th, 2008 | Posted in Celebrity Gossip, Music News

Rap star Kanye West was met with some hostility when he showed up two hours late for a concert, reports the Associated Press.
The “Louis Vuitton Don” was supposed to start his show at 2:45 a.m. yesterday, but he didn’t appear on stage at Tennessee’s Bonnaroo until 4:25 a.m. on Sunday morning.
The fans were seriously irate, chanting “Kanye sucks” and throwing glow sticks on the empty stage.
According to the festival organizers, the delay was caused by Kanye’s elaborately futuristic stage set, which took a while to throw up after Pearl Jam’s appearance.

Kanye West To Entertainment Weekly: Don’t Come To My Show!
May 5th, 2008 | Posted in Celebrity Gossip, Magazines, Music News

Kanye West is none too happy about a B+ review of his Glow in the Dark tour in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly.
The EW review by writer Chris Willman said Kanye’s tour “takes fans on a galactic voyage, folding his hits into a wacked-out space opera that’s the ultimate ego trip. Normally, that’d be an insult, but with West, who’s made an art form out of dramatizing both humility and hubris, it’s mission accomplished.”
Willman also took a jab at opening acts Lupe Fiasco, N.E.R.D. and Rihanna.
He wrote, “Lupe Fiasco has the material to make good on his ‘next Kanye’ status, though he suffered from rapping to studio tracks (and ‘Kick, Push’ deserves more than a reduced medley slot). By contrast, N.E.R.D. rocked out with their full-band set; Pharrell Williams is no great singer, but he’s a great party starter. The glam Rihanna provided respite from all this testosterone and packed an undeniable string of hits into her half hour, moving smoothly through light choreography. But her should-be slam dunk, ‘Umbrella,’ felt off, with the rain-gear-wielding backup dancers working harder to sell the smash than she did.”
In a posting on his blog, The Louis Vuitton Don responded to the criticism with the following:
Yo, anybody that’s not a fan; don’t come to my show. For what?! To try and throw ya’ll two cents in? Ya’ll rated my album shitty and now ya’ll come to the show and give it a B+. What’s a B+ mean? I’m an extremist. It’s either pass or fail! A+ or F-! You know what, fuck you and the whole fucking staff!!! I know I shouldn’t dignify this with a comment, but the reviewer threw a jab at all the artists. I just wanna know when was the last time you enjoyed yourself. If you can’t have fun and lose yourself at this tour it’s a good chance you’re a very miserable person. I actually feel sorry for you guys. Your job forces you to not have fun anymore. Grab a drink, holla at some nice girls, and party bitch!! You don’t know shit about passion and art. You’ll never gain credibility at this rate. You’re fucking trash! I make art. You can’t rate this. I’m a real person. I’m not a pop star. I don’t care about anything but making great art. Never come 2 one of my shows ever again, you’re not invited and if you see me…BOW!! This is not pop, it’s pop art!
