UPDATE: T.I. Denied Bond

Rapper T.I., who was arrested over the weekend on federal weapons charges, was denied bond during a brief appearance in federal court Monday afternoon. A federal magistrate said he must remain in custody for now. Federal prosecutors are asking T.I., whose real name is Clifford Harris Jr., be held without bond until his trial, which could be several months away.U.S. Magistrate Alan Baverman scheduled a hearing on Friday to determine whether there was probable cause for Harris’ arrest and whether he will qualify for bond before trial. Harris was wearing a black shirt and black pants, with his hands cuffed and his legs chained, when he was led into the courtroom. He made eye contact with family members and sat in front of members of his family. He answered “Yes, sir,” and “Yes, your honor,” when asked if he had been provided a copy of charges against him and whether he understood the charges. During the hearing the courtroom was filled with a standing-room-only crowd. Those who arrived too late were forced to stand outside the courtroom.

T.I. Arrested Before BET Hip-Hop Awards

T.I. Arrested in Atlanta
Rapper T.I. was arrested yesterday (Oct. 13), just hours before he was set to perform at the BET Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta, in a shopping center parking lot where ATF officials said he planned to pick up machine guns and silencers he had his bodyguard buy for him.

T.I., born Clifford Joseph Harris, Jr., is charged with possession of unregistered machine guns and silencers, as well as possession of firearms by a convicted felon. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) executed a search warrant at his home, and according to U.S. attorney’s office spokesman Patrick Crosby, T.I., remains in custody.

The arrest resulted from an investigation of an individual seeking to purchase a machine gun without registering the weapon as required by law. The individual tried to buy three unregistered machine guns and two silencers from an undercover ATF agent in exchange for $2,200 and a pistol. The individual then agreed to cooperate with ATF officials, including with respect to his reason for obtaining the firearms.

The cooperating witness advised the agents that he was buying the machine guns and silencers for Clifford Harris, aka “T.I.,” a rapper for whom the witness had been working for as a bodyguard since July 2007. The bodyguard said that he had bought about nine firearms for Harris, and that the rapper had given him cash to buy guns on four occasions.

Harris asked his bodyguard to purchase the firearms for him because he has a prior felony conviction and therefore cannot lawfully purchase or possess a gun under federal law, while his bodyguard could lawfully obtain firearms.

The 27-year-old rapper arranged to meet with the bodyguard yesterday to take possession of the firearms. The meeting was recorded by ATF officials. The bodyguard entered the vehicle that T.I. was driving and showed him the two silencers and three machine guns that the bodyguard had purchased from the undercover ATF agent on October 10. When the bodyguard explained the function of one silencer, T.I. said “no flash, no bang.”

T.I. was arrested without incident. Agents found three firearms in the vehicle he was driving, including one loaded gun tucked between the driver’s seat and the center console where T.I. had been sitting.

As the BET Hip-Hop Awards were being taped, ATF agents were still searching T.I.’s home at 429 Creekview Lane in College Park. Agents found six guns in a closet, including three allegedly bought by the bodyguard for the rapper last month.

T.I. had been expected to perform at the BET Hip-Hop Awards. Other artists who were supposed to perform with T.I. went on without him. The self-proclaimed “King of the South,” was up for nine nominations and won two awards.

I hate to say it, but this is probably the end of T.I.’s career. He’s facing serious federal charges and a potentially long prison sentence. They have recorded conversations and video tape of his arrest. His outlook for this case is very bleak.
